Truecaller partnered with Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech for users of its AI assistant.
Truecaller, the popular app known for identifying and blocking spam calls, is now taking its services to the next level. The app will soon allow users to create an AI version of their voice to answer calls.
This new feature, accessible through Truecaller’s AI Assistant, lets users record their voice. Partnering with Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech, Truecaller uses this recording to generate a realistic AI version of the user’s voice.
Raphael Mimoun, Truecaller’s product director and general manager, highlighted in a blog post: “This groundbreaking capability not only adds a touch of familiarity and comfort for the users but also showcases the power of AI in transforming the way we interact with our digital assistants,”
Truecaller’s AI Assistant not only answers calls but also screens them, informing users about the caller’s purpose. This allows users to decide whether to take the call or let the assistant handle it. Initially introduced in 2022, the AI Assistant is currently available in select countries.
Previously, users could choose from a selection of preset voices for their AI assistant. The new feature of recording their own voices marks a significant step towards personalizing the service even more. Truecaller aims to make interactions smoother and more personalized, enhancing the overall user experience.
By allowing users to have their unique voice answer calls, Truecaller is setting a new standard in the integration of AI with everyday communication tools. This blend of familiarity and cutting-edge technology is a testament to the potential of AI in making digital interactions more human-like and personalized.
Azure AI Speech, showcased during Microsoft’s Build conference, introduced a personal voice feature that allows users to record and replicate their voices. According to a Microsoft blog post, this feature is available on a limited basis and is designed for specific use cases like voice assistants.
Microsoft ensures ethical use of this technology by automatically adding watermarks to voices generated by Azure AI Speech’s personal voice. Additionally, it has released a code of conduct that requires users to obtain full consent from anyone being recorded and strictly prohibits impersonation.
The effectiveness of personal voice in comparison to traditional voicemail messages remains to be seen. While the technology promises a more personalized and interactive experience, users will have to evaluate its performance in real-world scenarios to determine its true value.
